I finished off the pint of B&J's Phish Food last night.
Unplanned, but satisfactory. But emotion
still riles me. My stomach is a
thunderstorm. I imagine it looks like the Death Star trash compactor, complete
with hidden serpent and Luke screaming "3PO!" And the walls are
closing in... I am whirling mentally, but I'm also aware, steadfast, and
capable. When the waves come, I soon remember that I know how to swim, that I
can surf, dive, and tread lightly. These are dark and powerful waters, and the
tumult can dizzy and disorient, but I find the surface, and gape my lungs for
replenishing sustenance, and clutch the warm spark of resolve in my heart. I am
patient for justice. I am patient for love. I dine at this abundant banquet
afforded those of grace. I am a warrior, but not whom must slay all dragons and
attain the unquestioned throne of divine authority. I am David's slingshot. I
am a drop of rain that plummets to the ground with countless others to quell a
raging blaze. I do not work alone. But I do work. And my ripple is
transformative and compounding. And these elements combine, join hands and
hearts, and set entire continents in motion.

Tension Woven Unraveling
Every cell is gathered here, pushing and pulling at each other. There is grip and there is slip. There is consumption, eradication, dissolving. You know it’s there, and it’s here, too. You’ve tied yourself in knots worrying about if you can hold it together or not. Your nerves are frayed, like each failed strand in your grand rope. You can hope. You must cope. Grab hold of the soap and scrub away the nasty.
Isn’t any way to get perfect. That’s just how we’re at. The blood is spilled, it is transferred; stains come out with cold water. But you are twirling. The sheets are wound around you and tether you to the bed. Still your world spins. And you summon thoughts at unique speeds.
There are flaring glares and summoning stares and stolid misunderstanding. But you can sail this sea. You can savor the wind and stay afloat. You can brew the tea of enlightenment. You can find your recipe, and wear stripes with plaid. Everyday, you eat at the table of more knowing. Learn the ways of the masters, and salt their entrees with your own perceptions. Madly we go, but none have to know. When you’re healthiest, you care not what is thought, and you are at peace with the river.

Dear Representative Jeff Denham (Again)
I have
contacted your office by phone call, text, email, and fax. And
although your staff have been considerate, I have not received a response from
you. And I fail to understand your continued support for this tax reform
legislation. The only thing with regard
to this bill that seems of any value to me and my friends and family is the
label of "tax reform." I agree
that our nation desperately needs such a thing.
But this bill does not do the
job. It is a boondoggle for the very rich, and at the expense of
everybody else-- an overwhelming majority of people that you purport to
represent.
I cannot justify supporting this bill. I have not met
someone in my community who can justify supporting this bill. How can you?
I want to hear your words. Please carefully explain to me your
justification for supporting this bill.
How much do you stand to benefit from the passage of this
package? I can tell you that I do not
feel represented by you. You are failing me and my family and
friends. Does that matter to you?
You have a job to do, and so do I. I'm interested
to hear your rationale. And you must make your vote as you see fit. But do not forget, Mr. Denham, for whom
you are voting. As there will soon be a time for me to vote as well.

What of This Stone Mountain?
Some thoughts to develop... Why did my relatives want to visit Stone Mountain? Did they have a deeper understanding of what it represents? Did they just want to see it because it was a monument in their home state of Georgia? Were they impressed with the monument itself? What did they think of the mountain that had been carved into? Was there any talk of plantation life and/or slavery, or the contributions of slaves to the culture that the monument celebrates? What were they most impressed by in visiting the monument, and taking the tour of the Stone Mountain Memorial? What do they recall of the history of our nation with regards to this monument and the events and accounts surrounding it?
My intent here is not to drag anybody out into the open and ridicule their views or beliefs. I am trying to understand. That's all anybody wants-- to understand, and be understood. But I can remember my relatives going on a trip to Stone Mountain, and when they returned, they had much praise for the experience. But this movie puts it in a much different context. It speaks to the defiance of failed movement (at least, one that was conquered and surrendered to end the Civil War) that continues to the present day, insidiously, cached in the argument of "history" and "fond remembrance of a forgotten way of life." Not everyone sees it this way. But I do. I see the white supremacy movements as hateful. I see people championing a history that is washed "clean" of all negroes, and casts them as shadows, relegated to the background.
But there is middle ground, I believe. We don't have to disintegrate each other to attain it. We need to integrate ourselves, and own our history. Together. We have to embrace each other, smile, and get on with understanding ourselves and each other.
I cannot do this alone. I cannot know what you are thinking unless you tell me. Write to me. Comment on the blog, or send me a post card.

Reform Your Tax Reform
Dear Mr. Denham:
Thank you for considering my input. As I understand it, the tax plan which you will be voting on soon has a provision to dismantle or undo or repeal the Affordable Care Act. Please do not accept this provision. It has nothing to do with the tax code and should not be attached to a tax reform bill. In addition, it seems that the tax reform that this bill is proposing will benefit primarily the extremely wealthy and corporations, while actually diminishing the benefits and services for citizens like me and my friends and family. I do not think this bill would improve conditions for the majority of Americans, and should not move forward. Any tax cuts should go to what remains of the middle class and the poor. Study upon study has shown that over the last several decades there has been a saturation of wealth at the very top of the income brackets, as money and services have been bled from most Americans and earmarked for a precious few. This is a trend that must stop. It is suffocating our nation, and we are losing our direction. Please scrap this bill. Vote no. And work harder to make all of America great again.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Andrade

Honoring the Passion
So a new day has dawned. Well, technically speaking. It's 12:02 am now, and Wednesday is officially in production. And so is my blog for the first time in 2016. Ham and cheese Felipe Alou ya. (Somewhere in my brain, I just thought of a really creative way to say hallelujah with added colorful metaphors. And then I put it down in electronic ink for you, my dear avid reader fan. You're welcome.)
It's been so long since I wrote for the sake of writing. In an effort to communicate my innermost thoughts and tickle the muse's belly. Or just to share a concept or observation, and get it out of the para-reality of my mind and manifest it in the written word, and in the greater physical world. So welcome back me.
Since some time in 2007, I think, I've been sharing musings and photographs and political memes through the Facebook interface. And it's been mostly fun reconnecting with folks from my past, or just having a common place to go try and connect with people I know, even if some of them I've never actually met in person.
But oftentimes, I was left disappointed by the interaction with people on Facebook. I had numerous friends from high school that live relatively close to me. But actually finding time to meet anyone for coffee or a meal or just to chat-- to actually manifest a meeting-- just didn't seem to happen much. And I have a large number of people that I exchanged contact information with, but didn't end up getting the conversations going or receiving the mail or email or texts that I had hoped. I was constantly chasing people, it seemed, and not finding what I was looking for.
And I stretched myself to try and get out there more, to broaden my invitations and perspectives so I could better my odds of finding some friends to share my life with. I was more accepting of people who have opinions counter to mine, and I wanted even to converse about these subjects to hone my own opinions and search for common ground and solutions to the difficulties that we could agree needed our attention.
But often I found myself making sacrifices and not having my needs met. I felt like an outsider, like I didn't speak the same language as the others whose friendship I sought. Continually, I would try to interact, but I would not receive the interactive engagement that I was seeking.
But some of that is a part of my psychosis. I tend to take things very personally, even in situations where there was no intent for such thinking on my part. And it is often hard for me to identify this automatic, distorted thinking at the moment where it occurs. Oftentimes, it isn't until several hours later that I'm able to reassess things and discover my egregious misunderstandings.
That being said, there also seems to be no shortage of unkind, rude folks out there in cyberworld. And a strategic encounter with one of them at the precise moment when I am in the throws of a symphony of distorted thinking, well... it can lead to some regretful behavior on my part.
Or, I can withdraw, and initiate a pattern of avoidance that initially feels better, but does nothing to address the issue. In fact, it ends up exacerbating the problem, because it doesn't go away just by me avoiding it.
Anyway. At this point in my life, I realize that I am a writer, and an artist, and if I don't commit a significant part of my life towards exploring one or both endeavors, I get sick. Mentally ill. And I have been neglecting this in my life as of late. Even though I think I've done some good work and made inroads on several other fronts in the last year. It's not enough. I realize that. But I also realize that I don't have to fix it all. I just need to keep trying, as well as acknowledge that I am doing the best that I can, and that that is good enough. I don't need more pressure to produce some desired results. I will be my best self by honoring my passion and listening to my heart and intuition and trusting those that I love to help guide me where I need to go.
So basically I'm upbeat and hopeful as the summer is wrapping up and we transition into summer overtime here in the Central Valley. I have hopes of securing funds that will allow us to initiate plans for our yards and bring a bounty of fruits and vegetables and nuts and spices. I still hope to have an outdoor movie before the warms evenings have ended. I have many dreams.
How about you, kind audience? Can you engage me with your dreams? What does September hold for you and me?
I look forward to hearing from you.

To Brazil and Back
When I was 17 years old, I gave my varsity home football jersey to my girlfriend at the time so she could wear it and I could be extra cool, showing off that not only was I a varsity football player, but I also had a really cute cheerleader for a girlfriend who liked wearing my name on her back. But as high school romances sometimes go, it was short-lived, and I was faced with the task of somehow getting my jersey back from an ex-girlfriend.
She seemingly moved on quickly, whereas I was troubled. I had high-standards for who might qualify to be my girlfriend. I only had crushes on about eighty percent of the student body. But the names changed daily. Naomi, Kim, Jan, Carrie, Heather, Jenny, Jill. Michelle, Missy, Theresa, Dawn. So many beautiful flowers, and me buzzing quietly, scheming to slurp their nectar.
But that was high school. Which, looking back now, went very quickly. Didn't seem like it at the time-- I hadn't witnessed the speed of a workday at a job that I hated. Talk about eternity. Made those econ classes seem like bad commercials.
The perspective was different because the experience was different. The chemistry was different. There were lots of firsts going down-- first kiss; first "tongue," "first time." And everyone's was different.
I wasn't able to communicate the importance of that football jersey to my ex. So even though I asked her several times, I didn't get it back.
She had living with her that year that we dated (for all of three weeks) a foreign exchange student from Brazil. Flavia was her name. And though I never really felt attracted to her, I knew people that were. That doesn't mean by some mathematical transitive property I was actually attracted to her. But I noted that she was, well, feminine.
She was very different from the kind of girls I liked to "fall" for-- how she did her hair, and what she wore. It just wasn't my thing at the time.
But Ang had seen me in the hallway between classes, and she had come up to me and hugged me, and she smelled so good, and everything was so good from that point on. She was my first love, and she taught me how to kiss with tongue. It was exhilarating!
So I had started, almost immediately, about planning the rest of our lives together. Where would we be married? What will I do for a living? Where will we live? Ang was adamant. "Um, slow down!" she told me. "Let's enjoy right now."
In our free time we'd find some privacy and make out for what seemed like hours, just reveling in the emotion. It felt like time would never end, that we'd always be together loving each other in eternally renewing, freshly exhilarating now-ity.
I experienced significant growth and emotion then, and looking back it seems like there are strands connecting me back to those few weeks that stretch out over times throughout the rest of my life. I'm still so connected to those threads.
Nowadays threads take on different meanings. There are conceptual thoughts strung together in social media, conversational threads that string thoughts along. And there are so many thoughts out there, it's easy to think that it's all a mangled mess of knots and chaos.
I had felt an obligation to get that jersey back, not just because it was of much sentimental value to me, but also because it had cost my parents a lot of money and I felt guilt to that end. But most of all, I kind of saw it as the final stitch in the relationship.
Over the years, a lot happened. I fell in love many times, got hurt many times, made some bad decisions, failed some classes in college, struggled with drinking too much and not studying enough. And some nights, when I was particularly lonely, I thought about Ang, and how maybe we were meant to be together again someday.
Many years have passed. It's been almost 30 years since I was on the varsity football team. I've been married over 17 years to a real hotty. And we're very happy. It ain't perfect, but we're doing good.
I've reconnected with Ang through Facebook. She's married, got a kid or two. We exchanged a couple friendly messages when we first reconnected. But it's not like we're pen pals.
I still have those moments when I'm feeling particularly lonely. Especially because my wife is living away, with her mother, during the week, working in Santa Clara, and I'm here in Escalon. Weekends just don't last very long.
So I've been known to get on social media and try and drum up some entertainment. Always looking for conversations. Funny, how it's usually when everybody else is sleeping.
So on a total whim I looked up the exchange student. I had heard over the years that she had taken my football jersey when she had returned home to Brazil. And my mind just couldn't and wouldn't let it go. So I sent Flavia a note, asking if she knew what had happened to the jersey.
And she responded.
Yes, she did. In fact, her brother had it. She sent a picture, and there it was, looking like it had been frozen in time. 29 years-- had her brother worn it at all, or just kept in in cold storage?
She sent it to me and I received it earlier this week. My number 81, the same as Oakland Raider great Tim Brown, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame earlier this summer.
What an honorable thing, to preserve this jersey. Thank you. It brings me much pride.

What Gets Your Goat?
So, hello sportsfans. It's been many moons. Well, the same old moon, but many different appearances in the sky. Waxing and waning. About a year, really. Since I posted last.
So I'm trying to get 'er done. Get back on the horse and ride a bit. Hope she don't buck me. And sift towards the sunset.
Lots has changed. Like my location, for one. I'm back in Escalon, the town where I graduated high school. The town where I had my first sexual experiences. The town where my parents have owned a home (mortgage) since 1981. Well, not exactly true. They've since paid off the mortgage. But it wasn't always so financially expedient.
We moved here (to Escalon) in the summer of 81. I was excited because the girl I had been crushing on for the better part of my sixth grade at Creekside private school in Modesto was from Escalon. I somehow derived what street she lived on (via the phone book) and took to riding my ten-speed bike over to her neighborhood regularly. Alas, we did not ever chance an encounter. I wonder where she has ended up in this great wonderous world.
My parents originally faced great odds-- they had a mortgage rate of more than 20%! But through the years, the house has serviced the needs of the family. A brand new home, it was completely unlandscaped. And had a punch list of items to be corrected as a stipulation of purchase. But we made it through somehow, and I left my room for Grinnell, Iowa at the end of the summer of 1987.
So many things have transpired since then. For instance, mom and dad moved out and rented the place for a few years, while they relocated to the Bay Area, following better working conditions (and better pay). But they're back now, and they own another home that they are quite fond of. My sister and her family live in the original house now. My room is housed by my youngest nephew, named after me.
So I wonder now, what's the point of this exercise? Well, I'm hoping to get back in shape, writing wise. I want to take advantage of the situation I'm in and make some inroads towards what I want to do ultimately with my life. I'm still searching for the perfect turn of phrase, and to write a complete work. I mean, besides my other efforts to date. (Note the existence of The Raging, Flaming Goat of Samos, available on Amazon dot com and Barnes and Noble dot com.) I still hope to do a memoir recounting my experiences in Greece and the ensuing journey through the mental health spectrum. So stay tuned.
Truth is I'm a bit scared to try and get all this shit down. I'm afraid of succeeding in gaining an audience. I don't want to have to field questions about this shit. I just want to get it down so that others might enjoy experiencing through me what it's like to go mad. To be suicidal. And to live to tell about it.
I don't purport to have any answers or parables or shit. I just am trying to figure it out my own self. To get at the basic components and ride the wave, glistening, on the edge of destruction. I feel an obligation to revisit my fears and make some sense of them. I want to find the golden ore in the shifting granite. I want to elicit the elixir made of shed blood and broken spirits. I want to lay down the coronation blanket to comfort the fragile infant. I wish for understanding.
There are bits of it in music-- songs from my childhood, and from other chance encounters-- and there are pieces earned by suffrage and yearning for a greater good and balance. We must not give out the white flags. There is glory in continuing the struggle. There is nutrition in the stone and dirt.
I don't know why or how. I only know that I want to know. Do you know what I mean?
So I'm trying to get 'er done. Get back on the horse and ride a bit. Hope she don't buck me. And sift towards the sunset.

Loving Giving
A state of the union address, from the state of my own head. How am I doing? I think I'm doing very well right now. I have been compliant with my treatment and have stopped drinking. I'm in an intensive outpatient program and have been attending group therapy sessions. I'm being creative, making art and writing again. I'm a pleasure to be around. (tee hee) I'm making progress on my yards and garden. I'm helping out with the chores around the house. I'm cleaning up and organizing the office and garage. I'm blogging again.
I'm not dwelling on my mistakes. I'm not dwelling on my expectations, even when they aren't met. I'm just doing what I know how to do, little bits at a time, so I don't get too overwhelmed. And it's working.
Whaddaya know.
Is this how it's supposed to go? What say you, universe? Is the secret not so secret? Am I living at the speed and timbre that all things living do it? Is there really a thing called control? Or is it another ghost we created in our attempts to be all of it at once?
My blog is for me and those who know me, primarily. Others may stumble upon it and maybe even enjoy it. But I am not going to actively pursue methods of marketing it. Because it drags me away from the writing, it drags me away from my well-being. It drags me away from what I'm really trying to do.
I'm trying to find universal truths here, however I can. I'm only one tiny spec of perspective in this huge dust cloud of a galaxy in some larger entity's vacuum cleaner. So I'm gonna play as best I can. I'm gonna practice and try to give birth to a symphony, and may it be played and lead to more symphonies, if not a whole school of music. May these songs be sung and played and manipulated and regurgitated like nutritious syrup and enlightened kibble. May the violins streak naked sonnets across soft meadows of heather and jasmine. Strings, yes. Reeds, yes. All of them, holding hands and playfully galloping over rolling hills. Maybe even Julie Andrews would be there, before the nodule.
I hope to have more regular attempts writing down some of these endeavors. I'd like to write a musical. I'd like to write a song. I have already written lyrics. Here they are, to be set to music someday, of course:

“give love”
Love like a painted nickel
Love like a whirling game
Love like it’s meant for nothing
Love by its every name
Give all that you can muster
Give like the southward wind
Give like it doesn’t need you
Give all that you can send
Love one and love another
Love it all and once again
Love like fathers and their daughters
Love whether or not sane
Give to all that fight to matter
Give to all there is no greed
Give to each and every lover
Give until there is no need
Give your love to friend and neighbor
Give your love to everyone
Give your love to foe or stranger
Giving love is never done
I like that song. I kinda have a way of singing it to myself, but I'm not sharing yet. I think I might try and write a melody with my nephew this summer. He's quite musical and creative.
Thanks for reading.

A Post Is a Post
Here's something I posted elsewhere. I think even though it was in response to somebody else's post, it kinda stands alone. I guess, however, that I'm quoting myself out of context, which we all know is dangerous. So there's that.
Begin previous post in 3... 2... 1... "Thanks for sharing your views without judgement or indictment (unless, of course, you're an asshole). I'll go ahead and share my experience, for what it's worth, and so people can react or ignore or whatever. I was raised for the most part without religion, mainly because A) my dad had bad experiences with the Catholic church, and B) when I was young and identified as "gifted" my mom got advice to "keep him away from religion" and she did. So when I stayed the night at my friend's house, I was uncomfortable and lost when they took me along to church the next morning. But I think I've always been a spiritual being, wondering existentially about my place in the universe and about God. I've come to realize that I do believe in God, but I've yet to determine exactly what that means. I have limited knowledge of the Bible, or other religious texts, for that matter. But the idea that all of this means something greater than I have the faculties to even realize seems somehow right to me. I'm reminded of how I believe that truth is organic, dynamic, and fluid, like light is both a particle and a wave. We are many things, yin and yang, cycling paradoxically. I once read a characterization of the Hindu religion as the oldest religion of the world, yet it is also perhaps the youngest, because it allows for the authority of living teachers and corrections and evolution (paraphrasing the Complete Idiot's Guide). We are all of us moving targets, moving towards moving targets that we just can't quite grasp long enough to fully realize. I too love what little I know about the story of Jesus, and I respect your faith. I honor the passion to live a passionate life, honoring others. I feel like we are on similar paths. But each step we take is our own, as we journey through all of this. Again, thanks for sharing."
As always, I'd love to hear your input. All comments welcome.

Catching Up & Junk
So. How have you been?
I haven't posted here since end of May. Five months, or so. Seems like longer. Anyway.
I am sharing with you-- those who find me. Those who want to read me without me having to chase you down and slap you on the head with a rolled up manuscript. You don't have to pay to read me here; I create an abundance of love and hope with my words. I spring eternal. I share what I've got.
I share with you an ordinary life. With plenty of extraordinary mixed in. I have amazing dreams. But I also do laundry, brush my teeth (sometimes, anyway) and wipe my nose on my sleeve (when I'm wearing a long sleeve shirt, anyway). I breathe in, breathe out, and hope to traverse the unknown expanse between this so called "reality" and my gorgeously imagined hopes and dreams.
Today I got up with my alarm (not an ordinary experience in and of itself) and proceeded to get out in the back yard and water things. It hasn't rained here in about a month, and before that it had been a few months since it rained. There's still a considerable dew in the mornings though, so things do eke out their existence. It's kind of funny, we were out of town for a family wedding the day that it rained here, so we didn't even experience it. Those who were here said it poured for about a half hour, and that was about it. We were in Portland for my brother-in-law's wedding, so we experienced rain there first hand, of course (that's Oregon for ya...).
So since I wrote last... I've done an extremely small amount of work on my memoir project. I've started reading a few books and even finished one that I had been reading over the last year. I've applied for numerous jobs and even had a few interviews, but still no job offer. I've harvested tomatoes that I grew all by myself, and shared with friends and family. I've written a few letters and made some music mixes for friends and family. I've organized the garage a bit, and helped with two garage sales here, making more room to work with. I've started taking pictures of my junk and posting them on Facebook. (I love how that sounds...) I've won a "diet bet" and $46 plus I lost almost 15 lbs. I've been to Portland. I've gotten a new phone and joined the 21st century technology craze. I've enjoyed recollecting drunken stories with several friends in Minneapolis on speaker phone. I've kept a couple hydreangea plants alive (barely). I've harvested seeds from our tomatoes to plant next year's crop. I've planted a pineapple(!) and I've shaved my head for a Halloween costume.
Among other things.
I've even considered just throwing the entire memoir project in the trash and being done with it. What a release that would be! I would be free to continue to not do it, without all the guilt and pressure to do anymore.
I told Suzy that I was considering it. But I realized at the same time that it's something that I want to do, and something that I think I have to do for my own well-being, and for the well-being of others. I know that I'm a writer, and I know that I have a strong ability to communicate, deeply, about the things that trouble me, or that I feel, in general. I feel a need to share my words with the world, with the universe. I've set up my transmitter and I'm spewing out the gospel, spraying the wisdom around the solar system. Enlightenment set to reach Pluto by 2027!
A little more about the costume-- the party was themed around villains, so I found a fabled villain from Sonic the Hedgehog video game that I already had a resemblance with. A few select items, a bit of glue and tape and even some fishing line, and I became Dr. Eggman, aka Dr. Robotnik. A character with an IQ of 300. (Don't I look smart?)
So maybe I will learn something from all of this. Maybe I'm learning that I'm fine. That I'm doing everything that I need to be doing to get things done at the pace that I need to. To be successful and do the things that I want to do, to stay sane, to keep my wife sane, and so forth. Maybe I am doing the best that I can and that is actually perfect. Just maybe.
And maybe I am fucking it all up. But maybe not.
I suppose I should include at least one photo of my junk.
For prosperity's sake.
As always, comments solicited, encouraged, begged for. Let me know what you're thinking. Thanks!

Primordial Stewage
This was written some 20 years ago. It's the start of my first novel, the start of Thistle Penn. He slid himself up and out of the primordial stew and lit on the edge of the Great Cauldron. And there he stands, even now, observing it all, the swirling galaxy that is the surface of The Stew.
Primordial
Stewage
Go.
Next stop,
identity. We are moving through the
experience. Please do not place your
hands outside of the lines. We must move
rapidly.
The trees
to your left are the only ones in existence today. They once prospered in a large meadow which
we now call the Mojave
Desert. Do not touch them
please.
Who cares
where you really are? You think if
Einstein found it more interesting to think
about how to prepare the most efficient hors d'ouvres, perhaps we
wouldn't be so obsessed with such a self orientation?
Oh yeah--
think about infinity for a while-- about three minutes.
Feel
better? Now. Once upon a time, a writer began a project which only taunted him,
played with his every thing a ma bob. It
just kept toying with his expression, perching just outside of his vocabulary,
tickling the underbelly of his understanding, flirting with comprehension. The word.
What a shackle.
Each time
an inspiration leaped and the words dived.
And missed. The meaning was just,
like, ... Well it just wasn't there.
That's
entertainment.
Searching
for a pay off, the distraught dangling participle pursued the words to explain
itself. But once again, meaning
ducked. And vanished.
He looked
to his left. The trees were brown. Dry.
Brittle. Creaking. Sniffing.
He coughed
and sand sifted from his nostrils.
Morning now; if only he could
push on and through the wall. There
would be another land past the clay.
The guide
wasn't speaking any longer. He leaned to
help them dig.
"Is
this your first job?"
He didn't
know how to answer. Did he tell him
about the con? Did he tell him about the
gun? Did I ever tell you about the time
I got my head stuck in the stairs and my Uncle Dick had to hold me up and pull
me out by my feet?
The crust
rustled like a whey leaf on corduroy.
Wow. Tastes like toast.
Can't you
define your moment?
Developing
the story line seemed futile at this point.
But I pushed on, not because I really wanted to, but because I had
to. The rhythm was starting to shape
and I remembered what there was to be said.
I didn't care how brief it had been-- I knew what I now needed to do.
Wilson had tried
typing before, tried to push himself into not watching the keys. But it just wasn't happening. He practiced diligently, but only for about
an hour or two, and then not even regularly in a month. But at least he did that much. He could be like Alann, going for weeks
without sleep, snorting crank and no-doze and eating whatever crawled around
his apartment slow enough.
So the Beat
goes on. The musicians across the world
have sounded their opinions and their own personal sound. It just so happened that one such musician
had inspired the heart of an individual with a liking for finger blisters and a
longing for being published. He started
a newsletter.
Sinead
O'Connor ripped up a picture the Pope. Wilson wrote a book.
After that
Dramatic pause signified by the extra blank lines on the page, I feel
refreshed, and still every bit as frustrated that I can't seem to nail this
style, the plot, the purpose of this exercise. Fortunately, Wilson
knew.
Wilson started a
pot of coffee in his head. How
incredibly stupid this is going to look on paper, he thought. But he didn't stop to worry much-- he could
sense an urgency in his breath. It was
coming-- the earthquake, the tornado, the hurricane-- whatever it was that
would bring his ideas full circle. He
saw it off in the distance-- through an ocean of cliches and bad grammar, not
to mention tired plot lines-- kept afloat by a thicket-woven raft of
rationalization was his Cogito:
"Hey. It's my first novel."
Ah.
pace. Yes. That all important element. Automatic transmission preferred over the
manual when inexperienced; once you get a few blisters and thirst for action,
try the stick. You find that you
actually have more control of your vehicle, after a little practice.
My sister
still has yet to try the stick. She's
kinda conservative that way. Her
favorite poem is the road not taken, and yet she chooses the other road in
reality. She rides the rational
road. She pines to be non conforming but
just can't bring herself to color out side the lines. Is it Fear?
The noose
tightens. Impending death. We're all terminal. Time? Who has time these days? Time has
us. And it wastes us, eventually. Sure you can waste time, but never
completely. The body is completely
wasted in time, however. All in due
time. Is time eternal? Is there anything which lasts forever which
is measurable by the finite instrument?
Gary is another
person I know. He isn't a writer (of a
book or a newsletter or a poem) but he likes to paint. It warms you to watch him paint. There's a focus and centralizing of energy
when he approaches the canvas.
He never
painted trees before.
The
word. What a shackle. There are pictures which are so much more
efficient at the art of expression-- a picture is worth a thousand words. The word is inefficient and
misinterpretable. Clumsy. And it doesn't always express the right
color, the right smell.
John is
another person I met.
When I was
five, I can remember being young, cold.
outside when the sun was going down. Squinting up at the few clouds. Wondering if I would remember.
My mother
and father have done well for themselves.
They have set goals and worked all of their lives toward achieving
them. Every couple years or so the goals
change or are modified, but the striving is still there.
Why must I
write? Why can't Wilson come to the phone right now? He could do this and I could watch TV. Then I wouldn't have to search so hard for my
stimulation. I could just resort to
pushing the channel button on the remote control instead of searching for
meaning in these assorted symbols of the English language. I am orchestrating a symphony of meaning
through the improvisational typing on a keypad.
It's not quite as improvisational as it could be, but it is enough of an
improvisation to keep my fingers moving and my mind moving forward.
I will
someday be able to tie all of my knotted thoughts together in a beautiful
afghan or sweater or something perhaps? But for now? I must stop my silly
banter.
Ideas like
index cards in my mind. What
beauty. What beauty?
Take a
punch. Make a stab. Understand the voice within.
who is Iacob?
Identity
later. Now, the business at hand. I am a large ball of vibrating energy. Electrons, protons, neutrons, positrons;
chemicals, enzymes, proteins; organs, cells, systems; physics, chemistry,
biology; all organized hypothetical
perception. I assume that I am. It's all a matter of opinion.
Descartes:
"I think, therefore, I am."
Laundry: "I assume myself into existence."
Ball of
perception. All words are
misrepresentations of meaning. Foreclosure.
Trying too
hard? My typing is holding me back. Trust me, the ideas are there. I've got to live more life in order to
communicate them. Spend a few experience
bucks.
So if I'm
just a ball of perception based definitions, can I perceive myself as immortal,
universal, colossal, infinite?
One day I
was doing some heavy thinking, which at times is more dangerous than heavy
drinking (I've done a lot of both), and I imagined myself, my "self"
definition, as something larger than what I know. This of course is logical because my body
existed before I knew about it; that is, there are parts of my body that I
still do not know the names of or what they look like, and yet they are very
much in existence. So I can imagine that
I am mare than my body-- I am something that is capable of understanding my
body as well as it's environment. The
really interesting thing is that my self is just as much a concept as a planet
that I've never seen is. So What ties me
to my body besides my perception of it in context?
I could
just as easily be a seven hundred year old woman writing this. Really.
If i could just figure out how to preserve my body, i could easily stay
around for hundreds of years. Trees can
do it. Rocks are really good at it.
I think on
that day of heavy thinking i saw the end of my life. I saw myself on my death bed. I saw that I was insane, alone. Wrinkled, grey. And yet, something was still existing. It wasn't me as in my bodily me, it was my
consciousness.
Consciousness
is immortal. Imagination is
infinite. Imagination is creation. Imagination created God.
Imagination
is what can create a rock that even the all- powerful being cannot lift. Imagination can also create a God who CAN
lift a rock that he can't lift.
Imagination is paradoxical. But
it doesn't have to be. It can be.
So
reality. Huh. Another assumed definition that isn't readily
defined. Perhaps undefinable. Except in one's own imagination.
Imagination. That's what it takes. To do anything in any context you must have
imagination. Imagination is the energy
that fuels the fire and brings forth creation. Creativity. Imagination.
I am
cooking old boots? Ignore all communist
organic books? What the hell was I
thinking when I named this file IACOB?
Inordinate allied cobalt on board?
It's a cold old book?
I don't
think I'll ever be able to remember without going back in time and checking the
transcripts. I wonder if I'll get a
chance to do that after death.
Death. Sure is scary (is it?) to think about. All the stuff you know about yourself and
your environment and still you can't be sure about death. But its just as much a concept as you
are. How do you know you're alive? A List of reasons. You can imagine yourself dead. Can you imagine yourself back to life?
Index
cards. One man's way to organize
thoughts. I suppose I could do that, but
the clutter, and the trees. I already
waste too much. I'm human after all. Seems to be an obligation these days.
I'm being
interrupted by an impulse that i perceive as meaning that I must go to the
restroom and relieve myself of waste materials.
I don't even think to recycle.
God, What
will twenty years do to me and my concepts?
I'm 23
years old. I'm potty- trained. I am well versed in English, my indigenous
language. I can dress myself. I know the effects that usually follow the
intake of certain substances into my body.
For example, eating an apple. Or
drinking some water. I never have controlled
all other variables, so I don't know the specific effects and the various
processes that the apple and water go through.
But I assume that they serve certain functions.
I am bored
with this exercise. I am Laundry, and I
don't want to write like Laundry. I keep
fighting it. I want to write like Tom
Robbins, or Douglass Adams, or anybody but Laundry. No-- I just want to write faster. Like be able to write a novel in forty- five
minutes. Sure, why not. Wouldn't be so hard to avoid interruptions
and distractions.
Yeah, I
have tons to say. I just spend all my
time writing about how much I have to say. This is my curse. I will never be intelligent enough to bring
forth the beauty that I feel within. I
feel it, but I rarely capture even a piece of it on the page. And yet I just keep on trying. Maybe a part of me knows better and keeps
pointing me to the keyboard, saying-- "Stick with it, man. It'll come with time. Before you know it, in ten or fifteen years,
you'll have an outline."
Well right
now, I know better. I have to take a
crap.
How about
that Robert Pirsig? I'd like to write
like him. What I'd really like is to be
able to type a lot faster. Comes with
time, I suppose.
So-- Let's
see here... I must still be groping.. Something about infinity, death, reincarnation, EVERYTHING...
If you
stick and stick and stab at something long enough, you begin to notice an
effect. Usually positive. At least from your perspective. Like if you keep at practicing the piano for
a month. You notice after a while that
you can play a few songs. Or if you stab
your dog. After a while, you get the
desired effect.
So, the
head pop peek a boo cow's canal; Tell
me, why did you choose Grinnell?
Some things
are just done. Some things just don't
have a reason. This exercise, for
example. Most of the things I write
don't have much reason. Except as
practice.
Once I saw
a strawberry cheesecake.
If Daniel
could fly, why didn't he save the wren?
Why did he watch as it plummeted to its death?
Some things

I assume,
therefore, I am. I think.
Four score
and seven years ago, I ... I've heard that somewhere before...
Once upon a
time, in the black part of the city...
Plenty of
beginnings, a few endings. they all come home to roost in the end. Everybody's terminal.
So why
me? Why this? Why do I continue? Because I'm insane? What am I trying to accomplish here? Why am I typing aimlessly into the margins,
unaware of the perishing thoughts and dreams in my future, all of the images
that could be if i chose a different activity, all of them evaporating. All being extinctified by my current lack of
focus pocus. All being wasted, lost
forever.
Forever is
a long ass time.
Almost six
full pages of this shit and still no earth dog.
still not making the right mixture.

chokes life out of every fool that eats it.

Can't we
just start cutting this up yet? Will a
proper connection be made when scissors become involved? or must i resort to tearing a witticism from

truth is to openly defend it to the lay man and define it as your god. Then shake the hand of the devil an thrust
him a bone. if he turns purple, you've
got yourself a meal partner. If he
ascertains your meaning, it's best to turn back for a mint or two. That's the number two that you have to
invigorate. or list it elsewhere in the

what of the cross stitching? melting cuff toodle poodle raspy soggy

a hankering for cheese. Don't touch
that, you fool! You're sure to get moldy

The

steaming up my glasses with that horrendous dog of yours? isn't it romantic? It's just like flipping through the channels
on the radio station. or cable. fifty seven channels all at the same time but
not for more than one at a time and five second increments to boot. Whoooee Sally! Filet Mignon.
So let's dance the last dance tonight. yeah. you can ring my bell. imagine that you
can. imagine all of this suddenly making
sense. now you're there. you've gone completely to the store for some

you're not crazy. not yet. oh no.

What time is it? filafel.
At least
you're an organ donor. no brain

And then,
it happened. Payoff. the rights to the story were immediately
negotiated. the story was set in his head.

You can

The last
laugh. Shooting for the last laugh.
Once upon a
time is no way to start a story. Nor a
paragraph. Nor a thought. Yet it is still done. Are there really any mistakes?
All
mistakes are societally determined.
Contextually confined. piecemeal
judgements in the life picture.
Woa Woa yay
yay. I hate this more than I can
say. I seem to focus on tomorrow, oh
no. I just can't say what I can say.
Once upon a
mind meld an idea was born in the head of an increasingly selfish
individual. It had very little to do
with his occupation, a lot to do with his percieved hapiness. And so it languished. It heaved and sputtered like a dying fish in
a vat of sewage. Every so often, one
could witness a glistening brilliance of color and grace as the fish willed
itself from the water with a contraction.
Distraction.
Brought
back from what is generally accepted as reality, the artist returned to
attempts of capturing the glints of color on the dying fish. Weeks had passed since he last weilded his
sword; and wouldn't you know-- the phone
rings.
He makes
short business of the call, feeling some remorse for cutting his sister short;
but it is meant to be, the deed is done the die is cast the cliche is written
in stone. on with the show.
The chair
in which he sits is a distraction; the new dust cover on the keyboard is a
distraction; the pains in his back are distracting; the difficulty in
expressing himself is a distraction from what he wants to say-- his spelling
and punctuation is distracting- so many reasons to evade the moment, the
inspiration, the point of creation, the absolute incarnation of untouched,
unrationalized, pure quality.
But press
on he does. He attempts typing without
looking at the keys again. It seems to
work sparingly, but he decides to stick with it. Must get closer to the center.
For a
moment he ponders meditation and what little he has read of it (looking at the
keys again) and wonders if instead of
trying to go faster, he should slow down to as near a halt as he can. But by now his back hurts so he has to stop
writing completely and adjust.
No. must keep the inertia-- forward
movement; mapping this period of
unknowingness. The Inquisition. Who is Wilson? who is Gary? who is Laundry?
Wilson is
partially fiction, mostly real. Gary is a memory; a third grader with a yellow Star Wars
sweatshirt and a strange accent. Laundry is the person that he wishes to be--
that ambiguous crowd pleaser. The
clown. the good Samaritan. the stand-up comic who is quicker on his feet
than fourth graders on the recess bell.
Alas. The block persists. the impending success evades. What does it take? Who? What? Where? When?
Why?
Wilson decided
that it would be better to read more and research the ponderings of other
writers that he admired before writing anymore.
Procrastination? perhaps, but who
cares. Besides, a huge distraction was
coming through the door.
The Process
of meditation is one which endures to put one in touch with his or her true
identity. One must filter through the
masks to find the identity, beyond the body, beyond the mind.
So don't
even think about it.
Who? what?
when? where?
Whatever.
The date
was February 21, 1993.
"I'm a
firm believer in predestination, " Shari had said that day.
It made him think about things like mistakes and their context. A mistake that seemed really bad in the past
looked better now. In fact there was
some gladness in reliving it; he could
see the good that grew out of it.
Time which
passed put more words on the page, more words in the memory, more words in the
experience. More vocabulary.
But could
he tell a story?
He knew
when one was being told to him-- he knew when he was reading one. He could distinguish between good ones and
bad ones. But could he really tell one,
start to finish?
Allowing
for sophomoric mistakes and endless re writes, typeovers and miskeys, the
enigma set out on the task. to tell a
story. Hmm.
There was
so much to say-- so much already said.
and still no definite identity, no definite orator, no definition.
The
parameters consisted of English laguage, twentieth century knowledge, bias,
American culture and bias, a small liberal arts college pseudo education,
1970's middle-class American upbringing, Californian geographical bias, a predisposed romance with the inordinate and
strange, California public school groundwork educational bias, Drug culture
sympathy and bias, sleep deprivation.
The
thoughts did not require rational sense-- editors did. All that could be worked out later. What needed to be said now was the
skeleton. Writing down the bones.
Could an
interesting story be born out of this wellspring of bias?
It wasn't
his fault that the bias onslaught existed. That was not something he had controlled. Just as he didn't control the fate of his
father or mother or sister. He
controlled only what he created himself. He controlled the world of his story. The story that he talked endlessly about writing but actually wrote very little about.
Could that
be the story? Was that the one idea that
all the other shit spun around? One
large bullshit axis? A spindle which was
revealed only after all the yarn had been unravelled?
What would Wilson think? What would Phyllis Do? What would Thistle Penn think? What would Gary be doing now?
He pressed
on, remembering how thousands of times he had given up on this pile of crap; How many times did he declare this futile?
Meandering without a purpose?
Redundantly unpurposeful?
He decided
to break it down. A story. It must have a plot, themes, characters, a
setting.
Why? How can something dynamic and new and fresh
and artistic sprout from the right column of the third page of the twelfth
section of the Sears Catalogue?
The setting
was Easy enough-- imagination. Anything
goes. The plot? "A cartographer's dream, literally--
mapping the experience and existence of thought and consciousness." There would be so much too write about, so
much missed.
But you
can't get any closer to the dinner table by sitting on the couch. You can't swallow an elephant but one bite at
a time. You can't always get what you
want. But if you try sometimes, you just
might find, you get what you need.
Rock-N-Roll
bias.
"The
story has no point," they could be
heard already saying. "I find it
hard to imagine anyone who could identify with this... whatever you call it. It's not a story."
So
what. I'm alive. I can write.
I can write well. I have ideas
that bubble up from the sparks and explosions caused by my own unique
collection of data and matter. I
organize and sort everything through my senses and my culturally assigned
filters and come up with this.
If you're
not interested, well, fuck you. I don't
want you reading my story anyway.
"What
a naive, childish ignoramus," sounded the editing voices. "He'll never be a real success. He's too this and too that. Not to mention the abstract biological bias
or the cultural taboo and the unsubstantiated rumors. And he's so unspecific."
Whisper
words of wisdom: Let it Be.
The work
will take on a life of it's own. The
foundation is constantly being redone. Can't build a building from the sky down.
Or can you?
A runny
nose, a facial itch, and the endeavor is once again smitten. A slight pause kills thousands of potential
directions. and yet there still lies
outstretched an infinite supply of more.
Gleaning of
the fish again. It rises to the surface,
and bright, colorful scales begin to show, but a fit of sneezing and the
experience is missed. The art as it is
truly and originally intended escapes and only a carbon is left behind. A glint of what was there, poised, ready to
exist, on the precipice of experience, standing at the door of a twentieth
century scientifically classified mind, ready to be labelled, and whoosh! The butterfly escapes the net, the labelling
gun sticks it's message on the product that is already sitting just inside the door,
and the enigma escapes, once again, into the stew of unconscious.
And that is
what Wilson
wrote.
So who the
fuck is Wilson?
